Advancing Cancer Research and Care Through Global Collaboration: Highlights from the 2026 Summer School in Germany
As the cancer burden continues to rise across Africa, science, collaboration, shared learning, and global partnerships are shaping new perspectives and strengthening approaches to cancer care and research.
The NORA/REACCT-CAN Summer School was successfully held in Halle and Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, from May 11–21, 2026. The program brought together more than 80 researchers from Ethiopia, Tanzania, South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya, and Germany, fostering a dynamic environment for exchange and collaboration.
The summer school served as a vibrant platform for scientific learning and networking, with a strong focus on cancer research and healthcare in African contexts. Key thematic areas included cancer epidemiology, palliative care, breast cancer early detection, cervical cancer screening and prevention, and sustainability in healthcare systems.
Against the backdrop of increasing cancer burdens and persistent resource constraints in many African countries, discussions highlighted strategies for delivering effective and equitable cancer care. Participants also reflected on lessons from diverse settings, particularly in relation to efficiency, innovation, and resilience in health systems.
Through interactive sessions and group discussions, participants shared experiences, explored practical solutions, and strengthened cross-country collaboration.
